Dental Implants have revolutionized the way we treat our patients. Missing teeth, poorly fitting bridges, dentures, and extractions are no longer road blocks to achieving a beautiful smile. With Dental Implants at Northwest Implants & Sleep Dentistry, we love to help people achieve optimal oral health while meeting their personal goals for the smile they dream of. It’s a win-win! But what are Dental Implants?
A New Tooth
Dental Implants are essentially a prosthetic tooth. The crown of the implant will look just like a regular tooth, but underneath the gums it sits on a titanium post that we surgically place in your jaw. The titanium post acts just like the root of a real tooth, without the blood supply through nerves. The bone around the implant fuses itself to the post, making it immovable and allowing the gums to sit around the implant just as they do with a real tooth.
Restored Function
Because the implant acts much the same as a normal tooth, day to day life does not have to change as it would with a bridge or simply a gap. Your smile will not suffer, and neither will your eating habits!
Optimal Health
There are multiple health benefits with Dental Implants. When no implant is placed where a missing tooth is, the bone surrounding the teeth on either side are in jeopardy. The same goes for denture patients. The bone in our maxilla (upper jaw) and mandible (lower jaw) operates under the mentality “if you don’t use it, you lose it.” Essentially, if there is not weight pushing down through the teeth into the jaw through chewing, it will resorb. This is why denture patients lose bone and the profile of their face changes. When a dental implant is placed, as mentioned before the bone grows around it, and because it acts much the same as a normal tooth an implant helps keep healthy bone levels in the mouth. In other words, Dental Implants “use it”, so you don’t “lose it”. Having a well fitting crown on top of an implant also will help the health of the gums of the teeth surrounding it by preventing food traps and other issues.
